Updates from the SPIFi Project

April 2014 Update

An overview of the preliminary results for the project and the three intervention strategies are discussed in four update documents.  Follow the links below for more information.

SPIFi Project - Overview

This research brief provides information about the systematic risk management approach used to identify strategies to reduce workforce injuries at TFD. Included are descriptions of the three main intervention strategy areas, implementation and evaluation phases, and key findings to date.

Patient Transport

Patient transport activities are the second leading contributor to injuries at TFD, where 80-85% of calls relate to medical aid.  Learn how the mapping of activities and corresponding hazards during patient transport led to identification of strategies focused on education, engineering of devices, and protocol reinforcement.

Fireground

Fireground operations account for approximately 10% of reported injuries at TFD. Here we describe how hazards and control strategies that focus on improved awareness and reinforcement of best practices were determined for fireground response activities, from the time of call dispatch to return to in-service status.

Physical Exercise

Exercise has been the most frequent activity associated with work-related injury at TFD. This update describes how the mapping process led to implementation of strategies aimed to improve the structure and management of physical exercise activities while on-duty.
